Alkalinity, where to start? Alkalinity as we measure it in a reef tank is the measured level of carbonates, what are carbonates? Carbonates are the glue, nothing works if this is not correct.

For reefing we have the luxury of having available Sodium Carbonate and Sodium bicarbonate both. Each has its own application though and often get misused. PJS offers a Ph- and a Ph+, as the names imply when added they also effect what happens with the Ph.

In reef aquariums, maintaining proper alkalinity levels is important for healthy coral growth, and supplementation may be necessary, especially in heavily stocked tanks.

Enhanced Coral Coloration:
Alkalinity is essential for the corals ability to metabolize, photosynthesize and utilize all elements, food and for reproduction.

Coralline Algae Growth:
Alkalinity is essential for the growth of coralline algae's, helping in Ph stability, which is what everyone wants for good reason. It is a great indicator of overall health of the reef tank; it outcompetes nuisance algae and the very visual wow factor.

Protection Against Parasites:
Alkalinity helps protect coral tissue from parasites.

Skeletal Growth:
Alkalinity is the main engine for the 5 building blocks to work in conjunction, being incorporated into the aragonite skeletons of all stony corals and most all other reef critters.

Skeletal Density:
It helps corals maintain a robust skeletal structure, helping in preventing brittleness.

Skeletal Structure:
Alkalinity is the glue allowing the processes to take place.

Alkalinity Levels

Natural Seawater Levels:
Alkalinity levels in natural seawater typically range from 7 to 7.5 dkh,

Target Aquarium Levels:
Many reef aquarists aim to maintain alkalinity levels above this natural range. PJS recommends aim for stability above an actual number, a target Alkalinity concentration of 7.5-8 dkh, may be easier to maintain than an a higher level, you are more prone to instability.

Alkalinity Testing

ALWAYS test Alkalinity levels in your reef aquarium before supplementing to determine if dosing is needed to avoid overdosing.

Testing:
Regularly test Alkalinity levels using a reliable test kit or by sending water samples for ICP testing

Alkalinity Dosing

Check your Ph. If Ph is higher than you target add Ph-, if your Ph is lower than your target add Ph+. Always check your Ph to help decide which product you should use.

Methods:
Alkalinity can be dosed via liquid additives.

Consider Advanced Methods:
Dosing stock solutions with pumps and continuous drip systems can be used to maintain precise alkalinity levels.

Considerations

Ensure the supplement is reef-safe and follow dosing instructions. Avoid overdosing, as it can lead to imbalances and become toxic to corals and other invertebrates in your tank. Some other element additives may effect levels of Alkalinity. Do NOT mix carbonate supplements with other elements. Stability is the key here I actually use both, very low dose of Ph+ and Ph- is the main alkalinity effecting tool. Be aware the faster you alkalinity is consumed the faster your other elements are consumed. Calcium, alkalinity, magnesium and potassium levels all must also be maintained within the proper ranges as they all work in conjunction with each other. Clams, snails, shrimp and invertebrates use alkalinity to build, molt and maintain their shells and exoskeletons. Rapidly growing stony corals, particularly Small Polyp Stony (SPS) corals like Acropora and Montipora, must have consistent supply of alkalinity for their growth. Each reef tank is your work of art, and the ideal Alkalinity level can vary based on many factors, such as your coral type, coral density, and your water parameters and husbandry practices. Alkalinity is depleted from your water column through various processes, such as coral growth, skimmers, and other filtration methods.
